Ok, so I jacked this article....it's a good explanation

It's not plagurism if I acknowledge I didn't write it, correct?  Still after your through reading, check us out at www.cabinetrefacingofdallas.com

The following is excerpts from an article written by a succesfull refacing outfit in the far northeast U.S. I enjoyed his post and read some older ones but this is a good explanation of how we got to where we are in remodeling kitchens today, but I digress..........................................

"I get asked by home owners quite often whether their old cabinets are even
worth refacing. This is a good question. Let me start by saying, up until the early 1970′s cabinet refacing was virtually unheard of. Back then the kitchen cabinets were usually built for that specific house. The cabinet doors were either lumber core or plywood made from birch. There were no door style selections or assorted wood species to choose from as there are today. Store bought cabinets had yet to exist and kitchens lacked diversity and uniqueness.

The Old Cabinets Are Structurally Sound

It wasn’t until the late 70′s that mass produced cabinets were on the market. The flat plywood door was a thing of the past and a new style emerged, the raised panel door. Before long and to everyones delight, there were options for wood species, stains, and cabinet styles .

Raised Panel Door

Those cabinets that were built before the mid 70′s were so sturdy and well made that a new technique was devised and put in place to give these old cabinets new life. Hence refacing was born. And in the late 1970′s some of the first refacers came on the scene.

Refacing Is a Growing Trend

Some 33 years later refacing is a trend that is growing faster than ever and for good reason. If your cabinets are structurally sound then refacing makes a lot of sense. Cabinets should not be in disrepair or buckled from water damage, however tearing out a few cabinets and building some new ones in their place is not a problem when refacing.

Installing a brand new kitchen is major construction and a drain on your budget. I tell my customers if their cabinets are structurally sound then yes, refacing will breath new life into those old, sturdy cabinets of yours and better yet at half the cost of a brand new kitchen.

Cabinet Refacing Changes Kitchen Design

Kitchen cabinet refacing involves replacing cabinet fronts and drawers to update the design and give the overall kitchen new life. This can be an opportune time to consider other kitchen projects that will make your space more functional.

Kitchen Cabinet Storage is Key

New kitchen cabinet fronts and drawers will dramatically change your kitchen design, but they wont solve kitchen storage issues. As you plan your cabinet refacing project, consider:
  • Your biggest frustration with storage. Is it:
    • A lack of drawer space for large utensils? Are you tired of having large spoons stuffed in a container on the countertop?
    • Narrow kitchen cabinets that leave little room for oversized dishes?
    • A shortage of glass cabinets for storing decorative items?

  • What types of kitchen tools you store--large pots and pans versus odd-sized serving platters. The type of storage options you choose should be focused on how you use the kitchen and what you store.
  • What part of your kitchen design needs extra storage? Is it:
    • The cooktop area?
    • The refrigerator and adjacent countertop?
    • The breakfast nook?
    • The pantry area?

Budget Kitchen Remodeling: Kitchens Under $2,000

Remodeling your kitchen doesn't have to cost a fortune. These smart kitchen remodels are full of ideas for quick, easy, and affordable updates.

    \

    Fresh Perspective
The original galley kitchen looked dated, but its layout was functional. With quick updates -- paint, new cabinet hardware, and a few decorative elements -- the kitchen was brought up-to-speed on a dime. New clear glass panels and a fresh coat of paint on the upper cabinets refreshed the room's style at minimal cost. The neutral color palette complements both the existing black kitchen appliances and the cream-color laminate base cabinets.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $501
    Gorgeous Galley KitchenDecorative Accents
Decorative accessories (affordable additions) dramatically enhance the overall kitchen design, proving impactful updates can be done on a dime. An eye-catching pendant light replaced a dated glass-globe fixture over the sink and adds a touch of drama, while a new bamboo shade provides warmth and texture, bringing together colors used throughout the room. A rug created from durable carpet squares protects the existing hardwood floor from heavy traffic through the kitchen and into the adjacent garage.
Gorgeous Galley KitchenAll in the Details
The warm gray hue on the kitchen walls and countertop trim serves as a bridge between the black appliances and cream-color kitchen cabinets. Grass-cloth wallpaper lines the inside of the glass-front doors and screens the contents of the upper cabinets, providing welcome texture and a hint of modern style.
    Small but Stylish KitchenUpdated Charm
Painted white walls and a white ceramic tile backsplash already help this small kitchen live large. In a budget-friendly makeover, newly painted cabinets, chic cabinet hardware, and stainless-steel appliances freshened the look. To further boost the kitchen's style, the laminate countertops were replaced with warm butcher block, and neutral ceramic tile replaced the red linoleum floor.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $1,974
Small but Stylish KitchenSavvy Storage Ideas
Any extra storage space provides a big impact in a small kitchen. Moving the refrigerator just 13 inches to the right provided enough room to add another base cabinet and more countertop space. Open shelving installed around the refrigerator implemented even more storage, keeping everyday dishware within easy reach.
    Small but Stylish KitchenImproved Function
Empty space next to the range was the perfect spot to add another cabinet. This addition holds a microwave oven and small wine refrigerator, plus its top provides essential countertop space near the range.
    Classic White KitchenBright and Sunny
Yellowed oak cabinetry and dated wallpaper once left this small kitchen feeling dark and drab. New white paint on the kitchen cabinets and a sunny yellow paint on the walls brought the space fresh charm and made the room feel larger and brighter. A simple Roman shade made from yellow, green, and white lattice-print fabric adds a touch of softness and introduces a cheerful pattern.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $435
    Classic White KitchenComplementary Finishes
The Roman shade's Moroccan-inspired pattern brings a modern vibe to the room, which is enhanced by a new urban-style pendant light. The light fixture's antique pewter finish complements the new satin-nickel cabinet hardware and the existing faucet for a coordinated look throughout the room. The existing sink was in good shape and works well with the white-painted kitchen cabinetry.
    Classic White KitchenBacksplash Ideas
A new white penny tile backsplash replaced dated 4x4-inch tiles and creates a stunning focal point for the room. Honey-color grout adds a sense of dimension and helps hide dirt and stains. Kitchen appliances were still functional and didn't need to be replaced, which helped curb costs in this makeover.
    Mediterranean-Influenced KitchenDramatic Color Palette
Its design inspired by a trip to the Mediterranean, this kitchen greets visitors with cheerful colors and an inviting dining area. Before the kitchen remodel, the space was stuck in the 1970s and, at 70 square feet, offered little storage or counter space. To solve the space crunch, a wall between the kitchen and dining room was torn down, combining the two rooms into one welcoming space.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $535
    Mediterranean-Influenced KitchenReuse and Refresh
In a smart and frugal move, the kitchen cabinets that were torn out of the original cooking zone were reused and lined them up along one wall. Kitchen appliances were also saved and reused. The look of the space was refreshed, however, by painting the walls a bright coral and choosing apple-green furniture and accessories for contrast.
    Mediterranean-Influenced KitchenDesigner Details
Simple accents throughout the kitchen add plenty of personality. To add extra interest to the kitchen cabinetry, chicken wire and striped fabric were inserted into some of the cabinet doorframes. The old-fashioned look complements the furniture, which is a mix of vintage and auction finds, and adds welcome drama without much cost.
    Nature-Inspired KitchenVersatile Neutral Hues
A fresh coat of paint and new stainless-steel hardware brought these flat-panel oak cabinets into the modern age and cleverly left all traces of the original dated kitchen behind. The hues of green and brown on the cabinetry were inspired by the countryside just outside the rural home; they subtly connect indoors and out and offer a neutral backdrop for colorful accents. New cabinet hardware adds the perfect finishing touch. Glass cabinet doors on upper cabinets at the end of the kitchen help lighten the look and show off favorite dishware.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $1,371
    Nature-Inspired KitchenCheap and Chic Updates
New matte cream ceramic tile replaced dated laminate along the backsplash for a fresh, budget-friendly update. New 12x12-inch granite tiles bring a stylish look to the countertops, at a fraction of the price of granite slabs, and a new Roman shade created with fun, colorful fabric brings a dash of drama to the neutral color scheme.
    Nature-Inspired KitchenCareful Planning
Kitchen appliances stayed in their original locations, greatly reducing the cost of the kitchen remodel. Most appliances were in good condition; only the microwave over the cooktop was a new purchase. Glass cabinet doors on upper cabinets at one end of the kitchen help lighten the look and show off favorite dishware.
Modern Drama KitchenUpscale Style on a Budget
When the current homeowners purchased this home, the kitchen appliances, flooring, and black cabinets had already been updated. A few simple design tricks took the kitchen from basic to chic and contemporary. In the remodeled space, beige paint updates once ho-hum white walls, a glass backsplash with multi-hue mosaic tiles adds fresh character, and new laminate countertops with a sleek edge profile replicate the look of upscale solid-surfacing.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $484
    Modern Drama KitchenSmart Choices
A beaded-board backsplash in one area of the kitchen was in good shape, so that stayed in place, while the cracked laminate countertops were replaced with a more stylish, budget-friendly laminate. Fabric scraps from the dining area window treatments dressed up a ready-made Roman shade, which adds a punch of drama at the window.
    Modern Drama KitchenSurprising Details
For a fresh, youthful look, the upper cabinet doors were removed and the back of the cabinets were lined with foam core covered in colorful wrapping paper. The lively design adds color and interest to the kitchen, and the open shelving keeps everything within easy reach of the cook. Dishware in shades of red and white continue the room's color scheme for a cohesive look.
    Colorful KitchenNautical Inspiration
Before the kitchen remodel, the bland tile floor, dark oak cabinets, and bright white walls didn't offer much in the way of high style. Now the kitchen shows off plenty of personality and a timeless style, thanks to solid maple planks underfoot and bright red base cabinets and a blue kitchen island.
    Total cost (excluding labor): $1,390
    Colorful KitchenMoney-Saving Steps
The existing white appliances were kept as a cost-saving measure; plus, they fit in perfectly with the nautical motif of the kitchen. To add a punch of color, the base cabinets were first sanded and coated with a high-quality primer, followed by two coats of enamel paint. After the door and drawer edges were distressed with medium-grit sandpaper, the revamped cabinet doors were finished with brushed nickel hardware for a custom look.
    Colorful KitchenFinishing the Space
A bold, striped fabric on the barstool cushions help pull together the various colors used throughout the kitchen. Beaded board paneling on the kitchen island adds to the room's Cape Cod vibe, while the island's blue paint mirrors the rich hue found on the kitchen walls.

Small Kitchen on Budget but Big on Style

This wonderful post is a repost from our friends at HomeEdit, Interior Design and Architecture!

Small Kitchen on Budget but Big on Style

Are you looking for few kitchen interior designing tips that are big on style? Do you want the tips to be inexpensive so that you create an impact without breaking your piggy bank? Well, if this is the case, then you would be pleased to know that there are oodles of ways to decorate a small kitchen on a strict budget but big on style.

As you are looking for budgeted options that are big on style, begin with the basic, which is painting. Employ a neutral color such as white, off white, cream or ivory along with few accent colors such as orange, fuchsia, green or orange to paint the walls of the kitchen to transform the walls of the room.

Try to create at least one focal point for the room. A colorful backsplash area, utensil rack, stylish shelves or glass cabinet doors are few options that won’t cost you a fortune and at the same time, allow you to add exquisite accents to the room.
Kitchen cabinets are the heart of the kitchen. Proper stylish cabinets installed in the kitchen are known to create an impressive statement. If you are unable to purchase new cabinets, consider revitalizing the old ones. Consider changing the color of the cabinets and installing new hardware pieces. Alternatively, you may also opt for open shelves and cabinets. With open cabinets, the room will appear brighter as light will be allowed to travel freely.

Introducing quality lighting fixtures to the room does not involve a big investment and will allow you to spice up the décor. Your best bet would be finding fixtures that cater to numerous functions, such as task lighting and overall lighting. A monorail track system is a popular choice.
Consider building or buying a breakfast bar for the kitchen. Besides providing a space for informal dining, breakfast bar would add a lot of depth to the kitchen while they enhance the storage capacity and work area.
To make the kitchen stylish, you may consider placing few home plants in and around the kitchen. Buy easy to maintain houseplants and place them in earthen pots. You may also choose to grow various types of herbs such as basil, bay leaves, thyme, etc. Paint the earthen pots in colorful patterns and designs to create your unique personalized pots.(first pic from faiella-design.com)

    Cabinet Refacing Today

    Cabinet Refacing Today
With the current economic difficulties our country has experienced in the past 5 or so years.  Few industries have been harder hit than the Residential Real Estate Market.

While this has been devastating for alot of good folks, it has created a niche market for homeowners wishing to upgrade, repair or increase the serviceability of their homes through Cabinet Refacing, in fact it has become mainstream method of remodeling a kitchen.

Cabinet Refacing is a cost effective method of remodeling your homes kitchen by stripping the cabinets down to the bare box.  Secondly the contractor will apply a wood veneer ranging from 1/16th of an inch thick to 1/4" thick.  At that point the contractor will install custom built doors, the doors available vary from traditional Shaker to Raised Panel Arches (see samples ).  Matching Drawer fronts are installed as well.

Homeowners should always be concerned with the type of adhesives and method of applying the veneer.  Many veneers come with a peel and stick adhesive from 3M. Some cabinet refacing contractors opt for Thicker material and will apply Contact Cement.  While i prefer the thicker material, 3M is known for quality if nothing else.

Just as important will the contractor be applying Molding in the corners to hide their inability to scribe a tight corner?  Many of todays Franchise operators have unskilled laborers and count on the mold to give them the ability to get in and out of your kitchen to collect a check.  While this trim is common in Mobile homes and apartment complexes, it truly takes away from the custom cabinet appearance you are trying to acheive.  I would suggest you ask your cabinet refacing contractor to give you a price option of using trim vs. not.  This should give you a good reference of their competence as well as their commitment to Quality.  Subscribe to my blog, Next time will give some
references to the new hinge and drawer guide technologies available for cabinet refacing.
